Making the Most of Lent
Lent begins on Feb. 21. The season of Lent is the 40 days (not counting Sundays) leading up to Easter. Throughout Christian history, this has been a time when people practice spiritual disciplines to grow in their faith. Consider whether you want to try a new discipline for the season of Lent. Possibilities include:
- fasting one day a week or one meal a week (spend that time in prayer instead and send the money you saved to an organization that feeds the hungry)
- developing a new prayer habit
- daily Bible reading
- commitment to volunteer for an organization or ministry that helps people
- giving up something meaningful for Lent (caffeine, cigarettes, sweets, TV, computer games, alcohol, fast food, etc.). Whenever you find yourself craving the thing you’ve given up, pray for God’s strength to help you resist temptation. Sometimes it also helps to remember all the people in the world who have very little, and pray for them when you’re tempted by non-essentials.
For daily Bible reading during Lent, read the selected passage from Luke each day. You may also use a prayer journal for daily prayer time. Sundays are for rest and worship. The sermons at Living Water during Lent will highlight one of the readings for the week.
