"Idol Hands"

Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We heard the true story of the golden calf, found in Exodus 32, and realized it's a lot more complicated than the children's version of the story. But as much as we'd like it to be a story about the ancient Israelites, we can't help but notice that it hits close to home, too.
- We wondered why this group of people who had seen God do so many miracles would be so quick to make and worship an idol. The answer is fear. They were afraid when Moses didn't come down from the mountain, they wanted a security blanket, something that would make them feel better. Those same fears whisper in our ears - "those things we saw God do didn't really happen, God doesn't care about us, we're not worthy of God's love", etc. When we are afraid, we reach for the nearest thing that will give us temporary comfort or happiness - pills, TV, educational degrees, shopping, work, food, alcohol, etc. Many of these things aren't bad in moderation, but when they become our source of comfort, they are idols. God hates them because they rob us of the real joy He wants to give us.
- We also wondered why God didn't destroy the people for this "slap in the face." God wanted to, but Moses talked Him out of it. Even though God was angry, His mercy prevailed. There were still consequences, however, and the biggest consequence is that God moved away from them. When God sees that He is not wanted or needed, He does not stick around. But all it takes for Him to come very near again is for us to say, "I'm sorry. I don't want these idols in my life. I want the real thing that only You can offer. Come near to me."
- We prayed that we would turn away from our idols and run to our God.
- We shared communion around the table of love.
