"Samuel Anoints David"
Pastor Laura Guy
October 18, 2009
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We remembered that David's story takes place within the history of Israel. The people wanted a king, even though God did want want to give them one. The first king, Saul, was not working out, so God told Samuel to go anoint a new king.
- We read 1 Sam 16:1-13 - the story of Samuel anointing David. Samuel asked Jesse to bring all of his sons, but Jesse didn't even think about bringing David because he was just a boy. God told Samuel that He wasn't picking a king based on appearances. God saw David's heart, and He knew David was the right one to lead Israel.
- We thought about how often we, too, see only the superficial. We are surprised when people who are deemed "unattractive" have great talents. How often do we miss something great because we don't look with God's eyes or listen with God's ears?
- We heard the story of the day Joshua Bell played his violin at a subway station. Even though he is one of the greatest musicians in the world, and his instrument is worth $3.5 million, very few people even stopped to listen to his music. The only exception was children. Jesus said we must become like children if we are to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
- We prayed for eyes to see people as God sees them, ears to hear what God hears.
- We celebrated communion at the table of love.
