"Eight-Hundred Pound Jesus"
Pastor Laura Guy
October 4, 2009
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We heard the band sing "800 Pound Jesus."
- We realized that, even though it's a cheesy song, it tells the story of a guy who attempted suicide. Jesus literally saves the guy's life. There are people with real-life versions of this song. How would we live differently if we were aware everyday that Jesus had saved us?
- We thought about the third verse of the song - after Jesus saves the guy's life, he plants flowers and buys lawn ornaments as a "thank you." Are our tokens of thanks as tepid as that?
- We learned about how God was saving lives even back in the Old Testament. King David was on the run from his son Absalom. The words of Psalm 3:1-4 were written about this dark and sorrowful time in David's life. Yet, as David's head is bowed in sorrow and fear, he knows that God will "lift up my head."
- We know that God is in the business of changing lives, of saving us from ourselves. We watched a video of cardboard testimonies, stories of real people who had moved from a life of "before" to a life of "after."
- We wrote out our own "cardboard testimonies" and offered them as thanks to God.
- We prayed that God would make us truly thankful for being saved.
- We celebrated communion around the small tables, remembering on this World Communion Sunday that we gather at Christ's table with our brothers and sisters around the world.
