"The Killer Sermon"
Pastor Laura Guy
July 19, 2009
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We read Acts 20:7-12 and heard about Paul's long sermon that made Eutychus so sleepy that he fell out the window and died. But Paul ran out to check on him, and Eutychus was fine.
- We wondered what made Paul so insensitive to his audience. They had worked a full day and would work a full day again tomorrow. He could see they were getting tired. But the things he had to say to them were so important, and this was his only chance to say them before he left. So he kept talking and talking and talking.
- We heard Pastor Laura reveal the shocking truth that people still fall asleep during sermons! She says that's ok though because she knows that people just catch the sermon online later in the week :-) She said she's more concerned, however, with people in the church who are spiritually asleep.
- We learned that spiritual sleepiness is hard to detect. People who have it give the appearance of being engaged in what is happening. But inside they are numb, and they don't feel anything when they hear that God loves them, that Jesus died for them.
- We had to ask ourselves, "Are we falling asleep? Do we feel anything when we sing about God's love, when we taste the forgiveness of Jesus?" The answer to spiritual sleepiness is to splash some living water on our faces and start talking to God.
- We prayed for God to wake us up.
- We celebrated communion at the table of Christ's brokenness and our wholeness.
