"Ruth's Remarkable Decision"
Pastor Laura Guy
May 10, 2009
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We learned about the beginning of Ruth, how Elimilech and his wife Naomi went with their two sons, leaving famine-stricken Bethlehem and moving to Moab. While there, the sons married, but soon all three men died, leaving behind three widows. Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem, hoping a male relative would take her in. She prepared to say goodbye to her daughters in law, wishing them well as they returned to their fathers' houses and found new husbands.
- We read Ruth 1:11-22 and saw how Ruth chose to stay with Naomi, even though it was not in her own best interests. What would cause someone to make a decision like that? It could only be love.
- We thought about the ways we see that kind of love displayed, especially in the things parents do for their kids.
- We wondered if Ruth was also a metaphor for how God walks with us, even when we feel as though our lives are empty. God never leaves us, just as Ruth never left Naomi.
- We remembered who had shown us that kind of remarkable love. We heard a story about a woman known as Grandma Lois who simply shows up at Children's Mercy hospital every weekday to rock the babies. While she rocks them, she prays.
- We prayed that we could be people who show that kind of remarkable love to others.
- We celebrated communion at the table of love, remembering God's remarkable love to us.
