"The Lord's Prayer: Hallowed Be Thy Name"
Pastor Laura Guy
January 18, 2009
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We talked about the word "hallowed" and how it's an unfamiliar word to most people. It means holy, but even contemporary versions of the Lord's Prayer keep the word "hallowed." But do we understand what we're saying when we call God holy?
- We thought about God's holiness, how it is a complete otherness from sin, greed, hate, lust. God's hoiness is brghter and hotter than anything we can imagine We read Isaiah 6:1-5 where the prophet sees God on the heavenly throne with seraphs singing, "Holy, holy, holy." Isaiah is frightened because he realizes that when his unholiness comes into contact with God's brilliant holiness, he will likely die. Fortunately, God protects him.
- We wondered if we have domesticated God. Have we forgotten that God is holy? Do we prepare ourselves to come into the presence of a holy God?
- We prayed for forgiveness for all the times we have failed to recognize God's holiness. We prayed the contemporary version of the Lord's Prayer.
- We sang "Holy is the Lord" as if we, like Isaiah, saw God on the heavenly throne.
- We celebrated communion at the table of love and reconciliation.
