"The New Covenant"
Pastor Laura Guy
August 31, 2008
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We wrapped up the summer sermon series by asking what the Old Testament stories we've heard have to do with the New Testament.
- We recognized that, throughout Christian history, some have suggested that the God we find in the Old Testament is not the same as the God we know in Jesus Christ. The early church rejected any such thinking as heresy. Although we sometimes struggle with the violence and anger we see in God in the Old Testament, the thread that runs through the whole Bible is a story of God's love for His people.
- We heard about the messages of the prophets when Israel was straying from God's path. The prophet Jeremiah warned the people to turn back to God, even though it cost him dearly. When Jerusalem was destroyed, Jeremiah could then deliver the words of hope we read in Jeremiah 31:31-34. Even though the people had turned their backs on God, He chooses to make a new covenant with them. For Christians, the two things God promises - each one will know me and I will forgive their sins - are the very things that make Jesus unique.
- We saw how God has always acted to clean up our messes so that we can have the relationship with Him that He always wanted us to have.
- We prayed that each one of us would truly know Him.
- We celebrated communion around the table of love.
