"Ditching Saul's Armor"
Pastor Laura Guy
October 14, 2007
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We moved our worship to the PAC - the Parkville Athletic Complex - to experience worship in a new place for a week.
- We wondered why David made the list of "Heroes of the Old Testament" since we just heard about the time when he was guilty of adultery and murder. But before he had his stunning lapse in judgment, he was the boy hero who took on the giant Goliath (1 Sam 17).
- We saw how David was ready to take on a giant twice his size, even while trained soldiers quaked in their boots. But before he faced Goliath, King Saul first gave David the king's armor for protection. The heavy tunic, helmet and sword worked well for a grown man, but on a young boy like David, they weighed him down and threw him off balance. Even though they would protect him, he knew he would have to ditch Saul's armor if he was to have any hope of taking down Goliath.
- We thought about how there are still giants out there that God wants us to defeat - huge problems that seem impossible for any one person to attack. And when God does call us to do something about them, the first thing we tend to do is look around for any armor lying around on the ground. We want to feel protected. But the reason God calls us is because, like David, we have unique gifts and abilities. Wearing someone else's armor will only slow us down and throw us off balance. We must use the gifts and abilities God has given us, even if it means stepping out without armor.
- We prayed for God's strength to help us tackle the Goliaths we face and the strength to ditch Saul's armor when we need to.
- We celebrated communion at the table of love.
