"Bible - Believe It!"
Pastor Laura Guy
June 3, 2007
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We met Raccoon John Smith, one of the colorful characters from our past.
- We heard about life on the American frontier, and how different churches and denominations were constantly arguing over which had the true faith. Barton Stone, a pastor in Kentucky, read the book of Acts and Paul's letters to early churches and saw a different vision of what the Church could be and should be. He believed God wanted to restore the Church to the way it was supposed to be, unified and loving. The movement he founded was known as the Restoration Movement, and our denomination - the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) - is a descendant of that movement.
- We learned that one of the things that divided those frontier Christians was the use of creeds. Some churches used creeds as tests of faith, barring people from communion if they didn't confess to everything in the creed. Stone thought that by eliminating creeds and just using the Bible, Christians could find unity. An early motto of the movement was, "No book but the Bible, no creed but Christ."
- We thought about whether the Bible was still an important book for us today. Although some may argue that we do not revere it as we should, it is still the primary source of authority for us. The Disciple Bible Study class is a good example of how we continue to help people learn about the Bible and grow in their faith.
- We worked on our memory verse, Psalm 119:105 - Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
