"Prayer: How Should We Pray for Others?"
Pastor Laura Guy
January 28, 2007
Here's an instant replay of what happened in worship:
- We thought about how many needs there are in the world, how many hurting people need God's help. It is easy to remember to pray for people we know who have physical needs - healing, a job, a home, etc.
- We realized that we sometimes forget to pray for people who have spiritual needs - people who are lonely, depressed, leading empty lives. These are people who need the love of Jesus. We can lift their needs to God in prayer, too.
- We read passages from Paul's letters where he describes the kind of prayers the early church prayed for each other. Their prayers were more concerned with fruitful ministry than with physical needs. They prayed that God would do powerful things through the ministry of Paul and other leaders in the churches. Our prayers for others should also contain prayers for fruitful ministry.
- We saw that when Jesus prayed for the children who came to him, he put his hands on them to pray. We also read in James 5:13-16 that when we are sick, we are to ask the elders of the church to anoint us with oil, lay hands on us and pray. Laying hands on people to pray for them is a biblical practice, one that Living Water has done in the past and will gladly do for anyone who requests it.
- We prayed that we would become better pray-ers for others.
- We shared communion at Christ's table.
- In Act(s) II, we learned about William Wilberforce and heard about the movie coming out about his life called Amazing Grace.
