Church named Runner-up in National Chocolate Competition
Parkville, Missouri – April 21, 2010 – Living Water Christian Church was named a runner-up in a national competition by Divine Chocolate in the US, a fair trade chocolate company. The church entered the contest by writing a proposal for a World Fair Trade Day event. The proposed event, a Mothers’ Day celebration which would honor all women by giving them a fair trade chocolate bar, was chosen as one of twenty-five runner-up proposals. The church will receive 200 bars of chocolate which they will give out to all women who attend worship on Mothers’ Day, May 9.
The contest was sponsored by Divine Chocolate in the US. The cocoa beans are grown by a farmers’ co-op in Ghana which owns 30% of the company. The chocolate bars are available at fair trade stores and some local grocery stores. For more information on Divine Chocolate, go to www.divinechocolateusa.com.
The winning entry, sent in by the pastor, Laura Guy, said, in part, “As a church, we have served Fair Trade coffee since we opened our doors five years ago. We want people to be aware that the purchases we make are an expression of our faith and can positively affect the lives of others. That’s why, on Mother’s Day, we celebrate all women by giving them a Fair Trade chocolate bar. We point out that, just as baby Moses needed two midwives, a birth mother, a big sister and an adoptive mother to survive (Ex 1:15-2:10), all women are important and deserve to be celebrated on Mother’s Day. (We do the same thing for men on Father’s Day.)”
Pastor Laura Guy said, “We are thrilled to be selected as a runner-up in this competition. We love honoring all women, including young girls, on Mothers’ Day, and what better way to honor them than with chocolate!”
